Both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution brought British soldiers to North America, including Scottish Highlanders like the figure depicted here. When Highlanders were summoned to the American frontier to fight on behalf of the Crown, they often formed bonds with Native American allies, whose clan-based cultures and warrior traditions bore striking similarities. In this scene, a Cherokee warrior and a Highlander scout advance ahead of Major James Grant’s ill-fated 1758 expedition against Fort Duquesne. The artwork reflects the shared courage and skill of two distinct cultures whose ways of life were ultimately eroded by the expansion of British imperial power.
