The 69th New York State Militia, later the 69th New York Infantry, is one of the most storied Irish American military units in U.S. history. Known as the “Fighting Sixty-Ninth,” a nickname attributed to Robert E. Lee, the regiment was composed largely of Irish immigrants and served with distinction during the Civil War. Also called the “Fighting Irish,” the unit became renowned for its courage, heritage, and battlefield reputation.
