This painting depicts a British soldier of the 7th Regiment of Foot, Royal Fusiliers as he may have appeared during the Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781, in South Carolina. In was one of the most pivotal battles of the American Revolutionary War and resulted in severe losses for the Fusiliers. Four companies were captured, though six remained. Prior to the campaign, Cornwallis had retained 71 Fusiliers at Winnsboro, while the regiment’s Grenadier and Light Infantry companies were stationed in New York City.
Despite the heavy casualties at Cowpens, the regiment was far from destroyed and continued to serve in subsequent operations until the war’s end two years later.
