The 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia was organized in April 1861 and saw action at the First Battle of Bull Run before mustering out later that summer. The regiment lost a total of 25 men during its service and is remembered as one of the earliest Union volunteer regiments to see combat in the Civil War.
