On the Morning of April 19, 1875 the first battle of the American Revolution took place in Lexington and Concord Massachusetts. British troops left Boston during the night of April 18th with orders to destroy colonists' military stores in Concord. Paul Revere and William Dawes rode off ahead of the British on horseback to Lexington to warn Patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock who were able to escape arrest, had they been found by the British. The Battle of Lexington was a victory for the British, but Patriots in the countryside gathered quickly as the British marched to the next town of Concord to destroy supplies. During the Battle of Concord Patriots, to the surprise of the British, fought back. The battle continued along the entire twenty miles of roadside as the British retreated back to Boston.
