British Retreat From Concord (Canvas Giclée) by Charles Besozzi (1904-1997)
Open edition canvas giclée - 14.75 in x 36 in
On the morning of April 19, 1775 the first battles of the American Revolution took place in Lexington and Concord Massachusetts. British troops left Boston during the night of April 18th with orders to destroy colonial military supplies stores in Concord. Paul Revere and William Dawes rode ahead of the British column to warn Patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were able to avoid capture.
The Battle of Lexington was a victory for the British, but Patriot militia from the surrounding countryside rapidly assembled. At Concord, they mounted a determined defense, surprising the British with their resistance. The fighting continued for nearly twenty miles as Patriot forces harried the British on their retreat back to Boston.
