Frenchman Lafayette was wholeheartedly devoted to the ideals of the American cause. He spent the winter alongside the Continental Army soldiers, and was with them for many battles that followed. His monumental contribution was persuading the French government to provide naval ships and soldiers to General Washington, which led to the British surrender at Yorktown in 1784.
