Frenchman Marquis de Lafayette was wholeheartedly devoted to the ideals of the American cause. He spent the winter alongside the Continental Army at Valley Forge, and fought beside them in many subsequent battles. His most significant contribution was convincing the French government to provide naval forces, troops and financial support to General Washington; aid which ultimately led to the British surrender at Yorktown in 1784.
