Her name is closely tied to Adams County, Pennsylvania history and remains one of the most well known captivity narratives of the French and Indian War. On April 5, 1758, 15 year old Mary Jemison was taken from her frontier home in Buchanan Valley by Shawnee and French allied forces. She and one neighbor were spared, while others did not survive the raid. She was later adopted by Seneca sisters and chose to remain with them for the rest of her life, living in what is now western New York until her death in 1833.
