In the spring of 1755, General Edward Braddock led 2,000 troops from Virginia toward Fort Duquesne. After a six week delay, they reached and crossed the Monongahela River on July 9. Advancing into the forest, they were met by French and Native allied forces in a sudden engagement. Braddock had four horses shot out from under him and was mortally wounded on the fifth. The British line broke and retreated across the river. Braddock was carried from the field and died days later.
