Sergeant Stubby was a mascot of the 102nd Infantry, 26th “Yankee” Division, joining the unit at Yale Field in 1917. Smuggled aboard ship to France, he served on the Western Front, entering the trenches in February 1918 and participating in 17 engagements across four major offensives.

Stubby met President Woodrow Wilson in France, then returned to the United States with his unit in 1919. He later appeared in veterans parades and American Legion events, visited the White House, and received a gold medal from General John J. Pershing. He became Georgetown University’s mascot while his handler, J. Robert Conroy, studied law.

Stubby died in 1926. Preserved with assistance from the Smithsonian, he and his decorated blanket, collar, and scrapbook remain part of American military and museum history.
