WWI U.S. War Dog Hero
Sergeant Stubby became the mascot of the 102nd Infantry, 26th "Yankee" Division after joining the unit at Yale Field in 1917. Smuggled aboard a troop ship to France, he served on the Western Front in 17 battles across four major offensives. Stubby warned soldiers of gas attacks and incoming artillery, located wounded troops, and helped capture a German spy, becoming one of the most celebrated war dogs of World War I. Today, his preserved remains are on display at the National Museum of American History.
