In the early afternoon of October 9, 1781, George Washington was informed by his aides that the time had come to open the American artillery fire on Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. On September 14, four weeks after leaving Phillipsburg on August 18, Washington reached Williamsburg, where he was welcomed by about 2,000 Continental Army soldiers, an equal number of Virginia militia under the Marquis de Lafayette, and about 3,000 French troops under the Marquis de Saint Simon. These French forces had arrived from the West Indies on the fleet commanded by Admiral de Grasse on August 29. This combined American and French effort surrounded Cornwallis and set the stage for the decisive siege that led to the British surrender and the end of major fighting in the American Revolution.
