In 1944, thousands of young American airmen served far from home in the “Mighty Eighth” Air Force and other Heavy Bombardment units, flying daily missions over war-torn Europe Boeing’s legendary B-17 Flying Fortress. This artwork portrays B-17s of the 379th Bomb Group, based at Kimbolton, England.
The Carol Dawn earned a reputation as a “lucky ship,” completing well over 100 missions, carrying many crews safely home, and ultimately returning to the United States at the end of the war.
