June 6, 1944, above occupied France . . . With church bells ringing, paratroopers of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions descend in and around towns such as Sainte-Mère-Église. A short time prior, these young men were students, farm hands, soda jerks, and factory workers.
Now, they will fight for their lives and more—to liberate the oppressed. Soon, across the Atlantic, President Roosevelt will go on the radio and lead the country in a prayer for their safety. He will speak for every citizen and bestow a new title on the young warriors of D-Day. He will call them the “pride of our nation.”
