Confederate infantryman from the Army of Tennessee, in late 1864 or early 1865. The Army of Tennessee was the main fighting force for the South in the western theater of the war, but, due mainly to poor leadership, never had the same type of successes as their brothers in The Army of Northern Virginia. While Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and many others were among some of the greatest generals in the history of the United States; the Army of Tennessee were led by the likes of Braxton Bragg and late in the war, by John Bell Hood. Nevertheless, late in the war, with the outcome almost certain, and their ranks depleted by casualties and most recently, desertion; the heartiest of these men fought on . Stubborn, defiant, but, most of all brave and loyal to the cause they believed in; they continued to the very end; and it is the character of these type of men that Don Troiani portrays in this artwork.
